The Carbon Neutral Electricity Sector Alliance and the Interface project join forces to promote actions on climate change, biodiversity and gender in the Colombian electricity sector

Bogotá, 15 de agosto de 2024 - La Alianza Sector Eléctrico Carbono Neutral, ASECN, y el Interface project, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH announced the start of a strategic technical cooperation with 12 ASECN member companies. This collaboration will focus on three key areas:

  1. Development of comprehensive corporate Climate Change, Biodiversity and Gender Management Plans (PIGCCe) for three Alliance member companies.
  2. Standardization of the PIGCCe, Integrated Business Climate Change Management Plans, for the Alliance.
  3. Creation of guidelines for reporting progress on climate change (mitigation and adaptation), biodiversity and gender for the Alliance.

The ASECN, founded in 2021, seeks to coordinate the efforts of the energy sector to achieve carbon neutrality of the National Interconnected System (SIN) in the medium (2030) and long term (2050). It is led by the Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy with the technical secretariat of XM, operator of the National Interconnected System and Administrator of the Wholesale Energy Market. Among its achievements to date are the identification of carbon neutrality trajectories for its members, the definition of the baseline for the compilation of data and the interaction with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development for the articulation with the National Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience Program.

“We are very pleased to partner with GIZ to support the Carbon Neutral Power Sector Alliance. This agreement represents a significant step in our common commitment to a more sustainable future and will be a crucial support for the companies that are currently part of this initiative and those that we know will join in the near future. We are committed to joining forces to achieve carbon neutrality in the sector by 2050,” said María Nohemi Arboleda, general manager of XM.

The Interface project, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), seeks to strengthen the implementation of Colombia's climate, just energy transition, gender and biodiversity objectives. Among its expected results is the implementation of comprehensive climate change and biodiversity management plans in pilot companies in the industry and energy sectors with a gender focus.
