Since 2011, the German government has been supporting climate and biodiversity projects in Colombia through the International Climate Initiative (IKI). With a portfolio of 46 bilateral, regional and global projects implemented by 26 different organisations in the areas of mitigation, adaptation, REDD+ and biodiversity, Colombia is a strong focus country of the IKI. The total funding volume of these projects is more than 489 million €. 68 million € of this sum are dedicated exclusively to bilateral projects in Colombia, the rest supports activities in Colombia and other countries where regional and global projects are implemented.

The diverse portfolio of the IKI in Colombia operates on a national, regional and local level and is directly aligned with the country’s ambitions and challenges in the areas of climate change and environmental protection. The projects support the government in the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), the development of green finance mechanisms, the protection of ecosystems and coastal areas, sustainable agriculture practices and low-carbon transport, thereby making an important contribution to Colombia’s climate and environmental goals.

Within the framework of IKI’s knowledge management strategy, a number of projects in the partner countries have been selected and provided with an interface function to support the exchange between all IKI projects in these countries and inform the German government about relevant changes on a strategic and political level in the respective countries.

The NDC Policy Programme (ProNDC), implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Colombia’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MinAmbiente), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MinAgricultura) and National Planning Department (DNP), was established as an interface for IKI projects in Colombia. As part of this role, the interface carries out various knowledge management activities in order to facilitate an exchange between all implementing organisations and projects, share experiences and strengthen synergies between IKI projects in Colombia.
