The Colombian government’s National Development Plan focuses on increasing renewable energy use and improving infrastructure to ensure energy services are safe, reliable, and affordable. A key element is the development of Energy Communities (EC), which engage communities in energy production and consumption through self-generation and distributed resources, allowing energy democratization. The project aims to transition to a low-carbon economy by adding 105 MW of renewable energy and enhancing policy and regulatory frameworks. It targets inclusive participation from low- and middle-income populations in EC projects. The plan includes financial support and technical assistance to promote ECs, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 177,243 tons and create 10,157 green jobs over four years. Ultimately, the EC model will serve over 20,000 new users, improving energy reliability and fostering community empowerment and economic diversification.
