- The objective is to strengthen cooperation on climate and energy issues and to showcase routes to a socially just and environmentally friendly energy transition.
- This year, the Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWE) have assumed the co-presidency of this alliance. Both governments reaffirm their interest in the decarbonization of their economies.
From June 3rd to 6th, 2025, the First Week of the Climate and Just Energy Transition Partnership between Colombia and Germany will take place in Bogota with various events at Universidad de los Andes. The aim is to strengthen cooperation in the fields of climate and energy and to show how a socially just and environmentally friendly energy transition can be successful in both countries.
This year, the Colombian Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWE) have assumed the co-chairmanship of this partnership, so the first week of joint events will focus on topics related to the just energy transition. Along with a High-Level Dialogue between the two governments and two talks, the week will include the annual IKI Interface Workshop, which is a space for exchange on International Climate Initiative (IKI) projects in Colombia, the Second Colombo-German Economic Forum of the Colombo-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce AHK, and the second meeting of the High-Level Steering Committee on Green Hydrogen.
Through the joint organization, both governments are reaffirming their high ambitions in decarbonizing their economies, moving away from dependence on fossil fuels and shaping the energy transition in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
Since 2023, this partnership has been the umbrella for bilateral cooperation between Germany and Colombia on climate and energy policy. On the German side, it comprises the Federal Foreign Office (AA), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN). From the Colombian side, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Energy, Environment, Housing, Transport, Industry and Trade and the National Planning Department are participating. During this week, the German ministries will exchange views with their Colombian partner ministries on concrete measures for closer cooperation.
For Edwin Palma Egea, Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, “cooperation between Germany and Colombia in the field of energy transition is key, therefore, spaces like these are essential to continue joining efforts and aligning objectives that respond to the challenges of the reality in the sector that we are currently facing. This week is an opportunity to continue strengthening and exploring these possibilities for cooperation”.
“Germany and Colombia have a close economic relationship. Our two countries share similar goals and challenges in the energy transition, from phasing out coal and expanding renewable energies to developing the hydrogen economy. I am therefore even more pleased that the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy has assumed the chairmanship of our Partnership on behalf of Germany. With this special week of events in Bogota, we want to intensify our exchange, learn from each other and further boost our diverse/diversified cooperation. I am sure that these events will give important impulses to our bilateral relations” according to Stefan Rouenhoff, Deputy Parliamentary Deputy Minister to the Federal Minister of Economics and Energy.
During this week, the Colombian-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce AHK also celebrates its 90th anniversary and the inauguration of the exhibition Energy in Transition – Powering Tomorrow led by the Federal Foreign Office (AA) will be held until June 22nd at Universidad de los Andes.
