A new study published by the Global Green Growth Institute — GGGI, in the framework of the SPAR6C program (Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation), funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety — BMUKN, through the International Climate Initiative —IKI, and developed in partnership with Carbon Limits, assesses the level of readiness of carbon certification standards in Colombia to participate in international markets regulated by Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.
The report, entitled Assessment of Colombian Independent Crediting Mechanisms for Article 6.2 usage, analyzes three national standards: Cercarbon, COLCX and BioCarbon Registry, and five associated methodologies. The objective is to identify their degree of alignment with the technical requirements for the transfer of Internationally Transferable Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).
Among the findings, the study recognizes important advances in the development of market instruments in Colombia, highlighting that since 2017 local standards have certified more than 120 million tons of CO₂ equivalent. However, it points out gaps in aspects such as traceability, transparency, information disclosure and governance, especially in REDD+ projects (refers to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to deforestation and forest degradation, conservation and enhancement of carbon stocks and sustainable forest management).
The document proposes a roadmap to strengthen the country’s preparedness for Article 6.2, with key actions such as: improving the independence of standards, strengthening coordination between registries and ensuring the effective contribution of projects to national climate goals.
In addition to its usefulness for Colombia, the study offers a replicable methodological framework that can be applied by other countries seeking to articulate their voluntary markets with international cooperation mechanisms under the Paris Agreement.
