Climate Change and Care: Towards a Green and Just Transition in Latin America and the Caribbean

Within the framework of the XVI Regional Women’s Conference, the side event “Climate Change and Care: towards a green and just transition in Latin America and the Caribbean” was held on August 12, 2025 in Mexico City.

The IKI Interface project and the CDAP Women Leaders Course initiative developed this space with UNDP Regional to promote regional dialogue and foster strategic alliances to better understand the links between climate change and the social organization of care, in order to develop integrated solutions that promote a just and equitable green transition in Latin America and the Caribbean in the framework of the upcoming COP30.

During the event, the main results of the study on just energy transition and green employability for women in Latin America and the Caribbean were presented, with special emphasis on the care dimension. Concrete recommendations were also made to promote a just and green transition, strengthen climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, and reduce, recognize and redistribute unpaid care work. These recommendations seek to promote public policies that guarantee the equitable participation of women in defining environmental agendas and sustainable development in the region.

Finally, national experiences from Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Mexico were shared, reflecting progress, challenges and opportunities to promote a fairer, more inclusive and gender-sensitive green transition, while moving towards a care society.

Márcia Lopes, Minister of Women of Brazil, Silke Silva Meléndez, First Secretary for Cooperation Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Silvia Morimoto, UNDP Resident Representative in Mexico and Andrea Brusco, Deputy Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of UNEP participated in the presiding table.

Natalia Moreno, Director of Care of the Ministry of Equality and Equity of Colombia, presented the country’s progress in this area, highlighting the CONPES on Care and the measures that are being implemented through the Gender and Climate Change Action Plan of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development. The implementation of this plan and the formulation of national strategies with a gender approach for climate resilience has been supported by the IKI Interface project, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWE) and implemented by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ).
