Fundación Humedales, with support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI), is promoting the Lagos Vivos project in Fúquene and Tota, two key high mountain lakes in Colombia. The Biodiversity Performance Tool (BPT) methodology seeks to balance agricultural production and conservation. In Fúquene, dairy cattle ranching and in Tota, the cultivation of long onions, exert pressure on water and biodiversity. Measures such as protecting water sources, conserving native vegetation, installing live fences, and reducing agrochemicals were implemented on pilot farms. In addition, 25 producers per watershed received training in biodiversity, water and best practices. The project demonstrates that conserving the lakes does not mean ceasing production, but rather innovating and recovering knowledge, ensuring that biodiversity and productivity coexist in balance.
