Guarding the sea and its marine ecosystems against the dangers of ghost fishing gear and other human-made waste

The Gulf of Tribugá on the northern Colombian Pacific coast is characterized by nationally and internationally important coastal and marine ecosystems, which are increasingly endangered by ghost nets and garbage.

The project contributes to the preservation of biodiversity by providing local communities with knowledge about the causes, impacts, and solutions to ghost fishing. It is a participatory project aimed at strengthening local capacities.

In particular, it seeks to ensure the continuity of the “Guardians of the Sea” group—specialized divers who carry out reef cleanups—and to complement their efforts through the involvement of women and young people. Furthermore, the project aims to develop a strategy in collaboration with the diving sector to sustainably secure funding for environmental education and restoration activities.
