Strengthening Capacities, Structures, and Collaboration for Effective Biodiversity Conservation at Subnational Levels

Peru, Brazil and Colombia, three megadiverse, multi-ethnic and multicultural countries, encompass over 80% of the Amazon basin and host other important ecosystems. However, they are teetering on a pivotal threshold regarding biodiversity. For instance, Latin America & the Caribbean lost 94% of wildlife populations since 1970.

The project will contribute to halt and reverse biodiversity loss in those 3 countries through the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework and by translating the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) into sub-national agendas that can be effectively implemented in selected action sites. This will be achieved by promoting a greater collaboration, coordination and efficiency across national and sub-national levels (Whole-of-government approach), by engaging diverse groups across society to further common policy goals (Whole-of-society approach), by enhancing local capacity and by promoting innovative financial mechanisms..
