Project description:

Urban transport of goods and commodities is a significant source of greenhouse
gases in Argentina, Colombia and India. Nevertheless, many cities hardly address this in their mitigation measures. The project supports environmentally friendly rules and practices that directly contribute to mitigating the impacts of climate change and to the achievement of ambitious NDCs in the partner countries. It creates greater awareness of the issue among local and national governments to this end, develops action plans and gives other cities an example of how to act. The project also strengthens institutional resources and competencies by involving all interest groups, making national policy recommendations and developing a self-monitoring instrument for the movement of goods and commodities. Demonstration projects from the project cities and collections of successful practical examples are intended to motivate national governments and to extend the project experience on a larger scale.

State of implementation
  • EcoLogistics project cities participated in the ICLEI World Congress 2022 in Malmö, Sweden. Together with experts, partners and cities, workshops on sustainable logistics and mobility were developed with a focus on equity, electrification and data. All Low Carbon Action Plans for Urban Freight (LCAP-UF) (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…) developed by the project cities were launched during the EcoLogistics session at the ICLEI World Congress.
  • The EcoLogistics team in the cities of Kochi (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…), Panaji (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…), and Shimla (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…) have created supply chain maps for key commodities, enabling cities to respond quickly to supply chain issues by implementing strategies. From a city government perspective, the maps are intended to be a tool that can be used to improve supply chain resilience for key commodities.
  • Together with the project cities of Bogotá, Panaji, and Rosario, ICLEI Sustainable Mobility participated in the Sustainable Urban Logistics Workshop in Grenoble, France (May 8-9, 2022), hosted by the European Green Capital 2022, Grenoble Alpes Metropole and the EcoLogistics Community – an initiative led by the City of Taoyuan and ICLEI. The forum provided a platform for exchange and knowledge sharing in the field of sustainable urban freight transport and Ecologistics. Cities, professionals and private companies shared best practices and experiences, as well as effective strategies and optimization solutions for a greener and safer logistics system.
  • Key findings of the EcoLogistics project were presented at the Transforming
Transport 2022 online event during the session "Urban Freight: How to Deliver Reduced Carbon Emissions" in March 2022 (www.youtube.com/…).
  • The EcoLogistics project was presented at the COP 26 side-event “Game On: City Ambition Towards Future-Proof and Equitable Mobility Systems”
    (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…).
  • The cities of Bogotá and Santa Fe participated in the online event”Moving goods: low carbon action plan for urban freight” as part of the Daring Cities conference on October 26, 2021 and presented their action plans (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…).
  • ICLEI World Secretariat presented the Guidebook for the Development of Localized Low Carbon Urban Freight Action Plans (LCAP-UFs) at the Daring Cities Conference 2021 (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…).
  • Presentation of the EcoLogistics Self-Monitoring Tool as a decision support system for urban logistics and environment departments in August 2021 during the XXI PANAM 2021 (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…).

  • Publication of EcoLogistics principles that local governments can follow to lead the transition to sustainable urban delivery for livable cities
    (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…).
  • Presentation of the report “Creating Sustainable Cities through Low Carbon Freight- EcoLogistics in Argentina, Columbia, India” at the 4th VREF Conference, March 23- 25, 2021 (sustainablemobility.iclei.org/…).
