Green Banking boosts climate finance in Brazil and Colombia

The Green Banking program began a new phase in Brazil and Colombia in 2025. Present in six countries, the Renewables Academy (RENAC) project, in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) from Germany via the International Climate Initiative (IKI), seeks to expand the capacity of banks, investors, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to structure projects in renewable energy, energy efficiency, green hydrogen, and storage.

In the two South American countries, the initiative offers 100 scholarships, in-person and online training, matchmaking events, and technical visits, bringing financiers and companies together. The proposal is to overcome the bottlenecks that limit climate finance, such as the lack of technical expertise to assess risks and the difficulty of transforming ideas into projects that can be budgeted. In addition to promoting connections between SMEs and financial institutions, Green Banking prepares the sector for expanding regulatory and market requirements. With COP30 on the horizon, the program is expected to help mobilize private and international capital to accelerate the energy transition and strengthen regional efficiency.
