Colombia Launches Its Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) Strategy

Colombia launches its National Strategy for Nature-Based Solutions with support from the IKI SolNatura project, led by GIZ, KfW, CAF, and other partners.

On March 17, 2026, Colombia’s National Planning Department (DNP) officially unveiled the National Strategy for Nature-Based Solutions (ENSbN), a public policy instrument that outlines a roadmap for integrating disaster risk management, biodiversity conservation, and climate action into a single development vision. Javier Pava, director of Environment and Sustainable Development at the DNP, summed it up this way: “If we view nature as an ally and the fundamental basis for our existence, we leave behind solutions made of concrete and iron to think about solutions of life, for life.”

SolNatura’s Contribution to the National Strategy

The ENSbN implements the mandate of the 2022–2026 National Development Plan , “Colombia, a Global Powerhouse of Life,” and is the result of more than two years of active dialogue with national agencies, regional governments, academia, and the business and financial sectors. The SolNatura project, which works to strengthen the framework conditions for BNS in Colombia, including monitoring and governance, contributed concretely to its development: from the conceptual advances developed in Huila, Córdoba, and Santander, to support for intersectoral coordination and the systematization of territorial lessons learned. The strategy also received support from the German Government (BMUKN), KfW, and CAF. According to Janina Heim, Environmental Advisor at the German Embassy: “This work not only strengthens cooperation between Colombia and Germany but also serves as a model for replication across the region.” View the full ENSbN document here and relive the launch event here.
