Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are actions and strategies focused on protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems. Their primary objective is to harness the benefits and potential of nature itself to address socio-environmental and climate challenges—such as the climate crisis, food security, and access to water—in an effective and adaptive manner, generating a comprehensive positive impact that strengthens biodiversity and promotes the well-being of communities. The implementation of these community-based tools serves as the cornerstone for ensuring the region’s climate adaptation.
Building collective knowledge
With the goal of addressing the impacts of climate change in the immediate watershed of Lake Fúquene, the Living Lakes: Biodiversity & Climate Project (LLBCP) is moving forward through an ongoing process of dialogue, regional coordination, and collaborative work. This initiative has brought together the efforts of nearly 700 people and more than 2,800 hours of work across six collective-building workshops. Thanks to this process, the fundamental inputs for developing the participatory Portfolio of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) are now being consolidated; this key tool is scheduled for publication before the end of this year.
Strategic progress and project development
Last July, significant milestones were reached in the technical and community-based consolidation of the portfolio:
- Adoption of regulatory knowledge: collective awareness was strengthened regarding the national water policy and its various instruments as key determinants for sustainable land management.
- Integration of results achieved: the contributions from previous workshops were synthesized by identifying local issues, prioritizing NbS according to different scales, and spatializing these actions to align them with current environmental determinants.
- Input for land-use planning: all this knowledge will serve as guidance for civil society’s contributions to the upcoming update of the River Basin Planning and Management Plan (POMCA) for the Río Alto Suárez.
This achievement reflects a commitment that originates and takes root right here in the community!
