The IMT is heading to Peru to hold its fourth partners’ meeting, with online participation open to its members

The Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI), comprising 67 members, is meeting in Latin America for the first time, with the option of virtual participation available to all its members.

The fourth IMT partners’ meeting will take place in Lima, Peru, from June 30 to July 2, 2026, followed by field visits on July 3 and 4. The meeting is jointly organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (MINAM).

The theme of the meeting, “Peatlands as a Source of Livelihoods and the Conditions for Their Conservation and Sustainable Management,” highlights Peru’s years of work, through its partnership with the IMT, to protect its peatland “water towers”: the high-Andean wetlands, Lima’s water source and the headwaters of the Amazon, as well as the aguajales of the Peruvian lowlands that stretch along the Amazon basin.

The sessions will address the four areas of focus of the IMT: science and knowledge, policy, practice, and finance. Topics to be covered include the latest advances in mapping and monitoring tropical peatlands, the incorporation of peatlands into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), South-Southand Triangular Cooperation, and resource mobilization, including carbon markets and payments for ecosystem services. Delegations from participating countries include Peru, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Mongolia, Indonesia, and Uganda.
